This, pretty much. A lot of the commenters are stuck in white-knight syndrome.
The world isn’t a pleasant place. There is no “morality police” going to save them. Even in reality that’s the case; people have just been mentally conditioned it’s not.
All those stories where isekai Japanese MC lets bandits go “because they promised” give me a migraine. Or in reality, where people assume “laws stop criminals”. They don’t; they’re retributive by definition.
I think MC in this story is doing as best he can given the cards he was dealt. Perhaps he could do more to help Sylvie with her mental trauma. Using his leverage as a child her age, trusted friend/”husband”, and as an “adult” (mentally).
